  • If I understood correctly when I briefly visited my son who was stationed there, they have a pretty stringent emissions test. I believe it's that which might prompt, due to repair costs to meet the standard, replacing the engine or entire vehicle at some point. I didn't hear any mention of a specified mileage. You won't see wheezy, smoky old clunkers running around there.
  • No, you do not to have your engine replaced. However, they have a mandatory Warrant of Fitness exam for your vehicle with strict (and difficult to achieve) levels of gas emission. So, most vehicles failing to achieve the competency level required at the exam, it is common for owners to purchase a new car every 10 years in order to pass. This is because the cost of getting your 10 year old vehicle fixed to be able to pass the exam is quite expensive.
  • They have a system called "Shaken" which requires all vehicle owners (over a certain CC rating) to have their car checked every two years. This usually costs about 120,000 yen for an average sized car. (it cost me 128,000 yen this year) As GoHayaGo said, most vehicle owners get rid of their old cars after about ten years, not because they are in bad condition, but because the resale value plunges beyond this point, making trading in on another car much more expensive. I've never heard of an engine replacement law though, and I've been here since the Edo period! LOL
