  • The group velocity of the light is slowed in the BEC to speeds as low as 17 m/s. The group velocity of a wave is the speed of movement of the envelope of the wave (not the speed of the peaks) and in most cases, is the speed that a signal can be transmitted. The light is slowed by the interactions, so the mean free path is short.
