  • "How do you partition a harddrive?" use fdisk, use windows installer "I have read that downloading Linus requires this." Huh? Linus is a person. What are you reading?! Stay away from comic books. "Would a portable harddrive be a viable alternative?" An alternative to what? You're not making sense. "What version of Linus would be best for beginners?" Again, Linus is a person. I think you mean "linux". Best for beginners? Use fedora. google for it my friend. When you get your feet wet, come on over to centos.
  • Semantics apart - Linus/Linux, you need to be really careful installing Linux on a PC that already has Windows. Why not have a look at Knoppix, which runs from CD and avoids the partitioning issue altogether. Admittedly it isn't as fast as an OS installed onto your hard drive, but you'll be able to decide whether you like it. http://www.knoppix.net/ If you do decide to install Linux onto your hard drive be prepared to format your drive, install Linux and then install Windows. Partitioning software is included with just about all Linux distros.
