  • Houston? You can see her Force ghost in Vegas. Maybe.

How did you turn the default avatar upside down?
  • Madonna wins. I wasn't born when she went solo in 1981. I first knew of her when I heard a song called 'Hung Up' in the Millennium, which gets my adrenaline going. Ever since I knew who she was, I started researching her music. After knowing more about her, I can see why she is the Queen of Pop music with songs such as: La Isla Bonita, Sorry, Material Girl, Music, Into The Groove and the list goes on.

I wasn't born until 1986 myself. I didn't know Madonna had been in a band before 1981. That's news to me. What band did she sing with?
    • Linda Joy
"After performing as a drummer, guitarist, and vocalist in the rock bands Breakfast Club and Emmy, Madonna signed with Sire Records in 1982 and released her eponymous debut album the next year."

Whence did that quote come? I know she said in an interview that she played guitar with "Breakfast Club," but she also did an interview where she claimed that she first learned to play guitar in 2009, just weeks before she went on tour playing guitar on her "Sticky and Sweet" tour. As far as I can tell, there are no surviving recordings of her playing guitar prior to that, and, not that it's usually much of an indicator in pop music, but she doesn't have any signs of technique consistent with anyone who has played for years.

Jenny Rizzo said Madonna went solo in 1981. That implies she was in a band before then. I've never heard tell that she was in a band, and she's one of the most popular singers in my neighbourhood.

Moodswings, Wikipedia tells us Madonna left the Breakfast Club in 1981 by her life and career. It is when her popularity skyrocketed in the early 80's: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_(entertainer)

Breakfast Club? That was a band? I've never heard of them.

Moodswings, I'm not too informed of Madonna's career. So I probably know as much about her as you do. lol

Sorry bostjan, I only just saw your question to me. I had to google it but its: https://peoplepill.com/people/madonna/

Thanks Linda Joy! Yeah, so that led me down a rabbit hole. I don't believe she played guitar in Breakfast Club, based on that source, even though the quote is represented accurately. Other parts of the same article seem to indicate that she learned guitar after leaving Breakfast Club, but then I found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56baYsAX-BY It's Madonna, definitely playing a guitar, and the date of the video is 1980, just shortly after she would have left Breakfast Club. Then I noticed that in almost every interview where guitar is mentioned, she quips that she only just began learning how to play. So I think that she probably learned guitar at a young age and throws everyone off by fibbing about how long she's been playing. I used to do the same thing when I worked in the food service industry, since telling angry customers it was my first day seemed to oddly soothe them anytime something went wrong that wasn't my fault. So, I just kept saying it, even after 3 years there... Anyway, thanks again for helping me go down that rabbit hole.
  • Whitney for me.
