  • Yes. But again, this may vary by state. A broker can set up his own indepent office, but an agent has to work for a broker. After you get your agent's license, you must find a broker who will hire you. After you've been working as an agent for 3 to 5 years (varies by state), you can take the broker's exam and get a broker's license that will allow you to set up your own office and hire agents.
  • Same in MASS
  • Ever wonder whether a real estate broker and a Realtor are the same thing? Well, they’re not. Not exactly, at least. Someone with a real estate license is a licensed real estate professional, or an agent. This person may also be a Realtor but isn’t necessarily one. We often think of any real estate agent as a Realtor, but to be one, he or she must be a member of The National Association of Realtors, which has trademarked the word “Realtor.” A real estate broker, meanwhile, has had additional training and holds a different license. Don’t think that you need a broker and not an agent, though. Either can serve you very well. Although many people casually refer to those who show and sell homes as brokers, they’re often actually agents. Most people use the terms interchangeably. http://www.raincityguide.com/2005/11/16/agent-broker-realtor-whats-the-difference/
  • If you're looking to get into real estate, you want to be a Real Estate Agent. That's the place to start and learn about the real estate field in general. Most states will require a 2 or 3 year period in which to do this before you are even able to qualify to be a Broker. As a real estate agent you will need to be employed by a broker in order to practice real estate. As a broker, you have much more liability on your shoulders as every agent that works for you can put you at risk. It's a great way to go for some as you can still practice real estate and you usually will get a "cut" and/or a monthly fee from each real estate agent in your firm. Even so, it's a costly start-up and you definitely put yourself at a higher risk.
