  • The main reason to wait until 10 to 12 weeks to bring home your new puppy is because after the pups are weened from nursing on Mom, they still have important life lessons to learn. Puppies kept with their siblings and Mother, even though the Mom Dog generally is quiet firm about..NO MORE MILK!..gives each pup a chance to learn THE RULES OF LIFE. Such as...If you bite me too hard, too rough...THE GAME ENDS or I'll bite you right back even harder or I'll call MOM! Puppies who have this opportunity learn, very well that when they continue to do things, such as play nipping...if they do not stop when "told" warned to, THE FUN STOPS IMMEDIATELY! This lesson helps to set them up not only to NOT bite US as hard or as much (which those really sharp puppy teeth) but it also gets them started on HOW to LISTEN and how to learn...learn all the wonderful things you want to teach your pup so that he or she is a joy to have in your life. Pups who get the extra time are usually healthier physically, mentally and emotionally. They are confident, alert to what is going on, they usually have better developed attention spans, and can focus on training better. Part of this is because they are a little bit older, and part is because of staying in the "home" environment longer with Mom and siblings! Mom dog may say NO to feeding time...but that doesn't mean she doesn't still have some great thing to teach her babies. I've used Mom Dog successfully a good number of times to start "the kids" off with their HOUSE TRAINING! What could be more natural than the puppies following MOM right out side for a potty trip? Most bitches will give the pup's back-end a lick or two, while I SAY..in a very happy tone...GO POTTY, HURRY UP, LETS GO POTTY! Mom's lick STIMULATES the pups to go and they are OUTSIDE...so they simply start to associate exactly what we ALL WANT them to know...GO POTTY OUTSIDE! It's a joy to bring home a puppy that is already starting to understand the concept of WHERE it should go potty...trust me on this!!! A seven to eight week old pup has NO clue that ANY thought process is associated with going to the bathroom. If you need to go..you just go...where ever you happen to be. Best of all, at 12 weeks the puppies are READY to start having some little adventures...away from the family pack...and what could be a better adventure than YOU, your home and all the love you are ready to give this new puppy as they adjust to the BIG LIFE ADVENTURE and change of leaving Mom and the siblings...? Breeders who give their pups this special and useful time with Mom and siblings are breeders who REALLY CARE. They want to sell their pups with as much support and positive situations as possible. They want "their babies" to be happy, well-adjusted dogs as they grow up. Also...FYI NO Breeder can accurately say if a puppy under the age of about 6 MONTHS is going to be a Show Quality dog when it grows up. No matter how much care you take with your breeding! You can breed what SHOULD BE a great match, that SHOULD create "show quality" puppies...but there is NO SURE THING until you see how the individual pups are shaping up...and that takes them time to grow up a bit, so you can see what you have! If the parents of the litter were not shown, did not earn their points and titles...beware of the seller who swears their pups are "show quality" and so charges you the higher price for the puppies! IT doesn't work that with with PROFESSIONALS... A Pet Quality puppy is just as wonderful a pet as any dog breathing out there...but they should not cost you as much as a POTENTIAL show quality pup. You should also plan to spay or neuter your Pet Quality puppy and many Breeders will even offer you a small rebate of $50 to $100,which they do charge you up front but state in writing that it is a refund, IF you bring the paperwork proving you DID spay or neuter the pup at the right time. READ your contract, ask questions of anything you do not understand or feel comfortable about. Always remember if anything seems wrong never be afraid to walk away, without a puppy.
  • Hi there! Personally from experience adopting a animal of any kind to young to leave their mother is a bad idea. We adopted a kitten at just 3 weeks old and she resulted in bad habits such as sucking our necks etc.
  • If u veiw chi pups at 12 weeks, u get a better idea of how big they will grow, and if they are very tiny chi`s, they can get Hypoglycemia once they leave mum (due to stress), and if u are not warned about this, ur pup can Die. I would never again take a tiny chi at 8 weeks old, and nearly lose her because breeders dont know anything about the breed. I learned from another breeder, and the internet, and my pup is now ok. I believe its only tiny chi`s weighing under 1 lb, at about 9 weeks that can suffer from Hypoglycemia. anyone with any info, i would be grateful. Thanx.
