  • The quickest way to get better at chess is to play against people who are just a little better than you are. In school, I thought I was hot crap at chess from playing against my friends and family, but when I tried to play in a real tournament, I got slaughtered against other serious players... but it did make me a stronger player than I had been. When I was active at the university, I was able to dominate the other students in the student lounge who played chess, simply because I had been beaten by better players than they had been beaten by. So, either that or be Russian. Maybe it's a stereotype, but it seems like a huge portion of the top notch players are Russian.
