It is a little disconcerting. I only just logged on for the first time since 24 hours ago, and whoosh! the blog is going nuts and there is this new feature. I'll try it but I am concerned a bit for the integrity of the site. I see where you are coming from with this question! :)

I do not really care one way or another about the new friends feature. I am not upset if I am turned down if I ask and I keep forgetting it exists. There are some bugs on the site that I wish they would address before adding new bells and whistles. I think they should fix pre-existing problems first.

With the detrimental categories which I boycott and now buddy lists which I do not really understand I am beginning to wonder if the site is intending to cater to a younger overall membership. It no longer seems to be interested in a knowledge database, judging by the questions now acceptable in This or That category requiring one word answers. Maybe I am wrong just a feeling I have.

Yeah. This site is intended to be for knowledge and wisdom, if I want mates I'll go on Bebo. Thats what I liked about this, you don't have to make friends (cause im unpopular on the internet) Also, there is absolutely NO POINT of the "friends Q and A" feature, because if I wanted to see that user's Q&A I'd just go to their user profile! Waste of space

I am not crazy about it. While it is nice to keep up with one or two people who make interesting contributions to the site, it makes for some awkward and potentially hurtful episodes when it becomes necessary to deny a friends link to others to keep your page/info manageable. I like being able to go directly to some recent activity by someone, and then go to their Q&As, but this new feature is just making too much stuff to wade through. There is also the potential for this feature being used to troll individual users. I would prefer not to have it. Yes, I find it depressing.
