I was part of a social minority from sixth grade through college. Once I moved out of that state, life improved. I am grateful for the time since being a minority has helped make me more tolerant of those who are considered "the wrong people" now when I'm part of the majority. . .

Just twice that I can remember. When I was a teenager I went into our local Hallmark store and the owner followed me around the entire time I was in there. Maybe she'd had a problem with teen shoplifters or something. I never went back there. Also, my husband and I rented a townhouse for awhile and one of the neighbor women almost went out of her way to be rude to us. So I think it was because we were the "renters" on the street. This type of situation hasn't happened to me since then. Edit: If I could go back I might have gone to a couple of Homeowners Association meetings to introduce myself. Maybe that could have smoothed things over a bit. I just didn't think of it at the time.

Well, I am Rromani ("Gypsy") so... yes. That designation comes along with my ethnicity. I am not getting it here though. I live in a mixed community (predominantly Black) and nobody seems to care about the lone Gypsy.
