For a more technical answer: Marilyn died late on the evening of August 4th, 1962 of acute barbiturate poisoning. She overdosed on the drugs Nembutal and Chloral Hydrate, both prescribed for insomnia. How this overdose came about is the subject of much curiousity and controversy. The death theories can be summed up into four main categories: Suicide, Self-administered accidental overdose, Accidental overdose administered by someone else, and Murder. Here are the basic theories: SUICIDE: Depressed over her firing from her last film and the failure of her romantic relationships, Marilyn consumed a lethal dose of sleeping pills with the intention of ending her own life. MURDER: Marilyn was deliberately given the fatal dose with the intention of killing her, either via enema or injection (a "hot shot"). The most commonly named suspects, either directly or indirectly, are the Kennedys, with the motive that Marilyn "knew too much" that she had learned due to her affairs with these powerful men. Other suspects who have been named include the Mafia, most specifically Sam Giancana. While every theory has its believers, it is most commonly held that whatever truly happened on August 4th, 1962, it wasn't suicide. An overwhelming propensity of evidence suggests that Marilyn did not die by orally ingesting sleeping pills. The scene of death appears to have been tampered with and important tissue samples from the autopsy mysteriously dissappeared, among other odd occurrances. There is very strong evidence that the circumstances surrounding Marilyn's death were covered up for some reason. The theories continue to be debated to this day. Those are all the possibilities. Those as one said the circumstances other than that it was drug overdose may never be known.

When i was a boy i asked the same question....40 years later i still believe what i was told. it was suicide(from fear of getting old and looking old). I was told by alot of different people at different times in my life and i have always gotten the same answer.she wanted to keep her young looking image. so that when you think of her 100 years from now she will still be young and beautiful. that is what she wanted...

Sad, lonely, and unfulfilled. She was ahead of her time; if she was around nowadays she would do much better. Society in the late 1950s and early 1960s wasn't ready for a talented, attractive, sexually liberated woman. She was one of the brave souls who helped break the mould.

Because, she was embarrassed about Jesus Christ. She said that she did'nt needed Jesus Christ to a preacher who approached her and said that the spirit of God had sent him to her to preach the word of God.

No one knows how Marilyn Monroe died actually. Her death was listed 'probable suicide'. I believe that it was murder because she had so much in life that she wanted to do and in the book 'the assassination of marilyn monroe' it stats that marilyn was happy hours before her death because her boyfriend was going to leave his girlfriend whom marilyn did not approve of. Marilyn took her personal house phone into her bedroom in the afternoon and stayed in there the rest of the night. Mrs murray, Marilyn housekeeper, changed her story she said that she woke up in the middle of the night and found Marilyn's light shineing under the door, but the housefitter said that she couldnt of because the carpet was so thick you couldnt see. Then in murray's book she said that she noticed something was wrong because she seen the phone cord running across the hall and suspected something was wrong and called marilyn's doctor. Miss murray changed the times of when she woke up and what happend. I think she did have her tablets but they police couldnt find any glass that she drank the water from, then the next day there was a glass just under the bed. There are many possibilites of how Marilyn died: ACCIDENTAL OVERDOSE: Marilyn was giving eight prescription containers. item #4 an empty container of twenty-five capsules of 1 and a half grains of nembutal filled by san vicente pharmacyon august 3, 1962; and item #5, a chloral hydrate container filled on 25 july, 1962 - of which ten tablets remained. OVERDOSE BY SOMEONE ELSE: People say she was injected with a drug but on her autopsy there was no sign of any needle markings on Marilyn's body MURDER BY THE KENNEDY BROTHERS: Marilyn was apprently having an affair with JFK and was in a relationship with Robert 'Bobby' Kennedy, and it is thought that they killed Marilyn. MURDER BY THE CIA: Some believe the CIA murder Marilyn Monroe. SUICIDE: Marilyn could of commited suicide because she was depressed by being fired from her last film and bad relationship, but I believe she didnt because she wanted to do so much more in life and had so much to live for. She was a pretty, successful woman. Marilyn had everything to live for. She was only 36 and just getting started!
