If a killer asteroid is ever found on course to hit Earth, why not simply mine it for materials until there is nothing left to pose a threat?

I think it would take too long to do so, because we probably wouldn't notice it until it was quite close.

First we would have to design and build some space ships capable of landing on it, then make all the equipment required to mine an asteroid, and then train astronauts in its use. That asteroid better be a LONG way away!.
