I don't think that falls under the category of not going out of your way unless it benefits you. Crossing the street to avoid a homeless person in NYC (at least in my experience) is more a matter of personal safety and nose protection. I live in NYC. There are so many resources here for the homeless. I can only hear the same story day in and day out from the same person before I start to wonder if they really did lose everything in a fire on Christmas day. As far as the first part of your question goes I agree-how many corporations would give to charity if it weren't a tax right off?

I don't think walking past a bunch of homeless people is "going out of your way". When I go to DC I do exactly the same thing you've just described, but only because I don't want to be accosted by several mangy gentlemen asking me for change, cigarettes, etc. I will also roll up my windows and lock my doors when I see a homeless person sitting in the median at a stoplight.

I help people all the time. I have taken people that claimed they were hungry to a place to eat and paid for their meal. I have brought those willing to work home with us and then paid them for work. I will not support drunks and druggies out on the street. I have NOT just given money to people that accost me in the street and paw at me and try to take my purse. If I cross the street when I see those kinds of people it is because of prior experience of the very negative kind. And one more thought. I have proposed to some homeless that said they were hungry that i would pay for a meal for them, even right there, across the street where they were, but they say they want the money instead. I'm sorry. I don't hand out cash like that. I am willing to help but I'm not stupid or naive anymore.

I go out my way to help all the time. It is very rare and I do mean rare when I give change to another person on the street. The whole reason I do this is because I want to effect real change (meaning have them(homeless/street kids take care of themselves) not to make them dependent and constantly ask for change everyday. It is similar to this quote, " Give a man a fish he will eat for a day, teach a man how to fish and he will eat for a lifetime".
