  • Yes, because he was. He revelutionized the art of "art" by going outside of the boundaries, but not losing his ability to communicate with people while exploring new ways to paint. Bold color and hazy interpretation. He was amazing.
  • I think there's an indescribable quality to his work which is exactly why it's so great. You don't have to think about his work, you just appreciate it for what it is- pure beauty. Like you appreciate the sky or the ocean.
  • You don't need to justify it. He is an artist of such stature that he ranks among the greatest and the rest is subjective. If you feel that he is, it is a matter of taste. Convincing others is another matter. I would check out a book of art history and glean some 3rd party quotes about his work. Here are some Van Gogh websites that may give you some third party validation to your claim: http://www.vangoghgallery.com/ http://www.vangoghgallery.com/misc/bio.htm http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/gogh/ http://www.artchive.com/artchive/V/vangogh.html http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/van_gogh_vincent.html In order to make your case, you will need some knowledge and appreciation of other great artists. You will need to also describe some of the qualities of Van Gogh's work that make it superior, but also those that speak to your heart. I think that you will be able to make this case.
  • But not with impressionism. Van Gogh really used his insanity and looked at the world in more "basic" ways.
  • I would like to help by saying you Cannot justify that (to others). In order to do so would require a social vacuum, and a reliable quantitative measure of emotion. Im pretty sure both of these things are impossible, so really you can only justify your point of view to yourself, in your social situation and with your emotions. To go beyond saying it's subjective, requires impossible condtiions and impossible people.
  • You cannot! Think of the thousands of works that have been created by thousands of painters! It is not like a football game where a score is kept! Accept each work from each artist on its merits.. I happen to like Vermeer very mcuh but to say he is the greatest is ridiculous! it is much like music. On a given day I may want to hear Bach and on another I may want to hear George Jones.. does one supercede the other? No accept each on its merits as I said..
  • No, because he's not. It's like music, in the sense that "the greatest ever" has to be able to do a lot of different things. While his style is unique and extraordinary, there is no reason to believe that he was any better than Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Caravaggio, Chagall, Lempicka, Schiele, Modigliani, Breugel or countless others.
  • I can understand why you love his work. He was masterful. But I don't know if anyone else can help you justify your opinion. Only you can do that. Art is so personal.
  • Just another male crazy man who in his last years painted his dying body in self-portraits mixed with everything from complete desolation to moments tinged with the last shred of a male ego. He was a religious man first, a painter later, and a jealous of his contemporaries. He was quite visionary..genius...sure at least when it comes to color, unappreciated, yes...until the 80s when his paintings sold at Christie's for millions...now..it's time to move on...why feel the need for justification? Van Gogh is great for you...maybe not for others...but who cares about others...you go on with your love for the man who made Starry Night one of the most popular paintings to put on the front of a Calenders sold annually at the mall.
