If you bought it new, It shouldnt be slow from the begginning. Also, Let me guess, It has Windows Vista? Ill make some reccomendations. Try and change the windows theme to Windows Classic, with no transitions or transparencies. (Right click on the desktop, properties, look around for theme...Windows Classic) Uninstall any programs that are starting up when you turn the computer on, You should have a firewall, an antivirus program, and not much else. How much more is starting up on the bottom right of your screen?

No. Memory and processor speed are the two key things that determine speed. A HD will do nothing, unless your current HD is completely filled up. If it has slowed down since you got it, it's possible you have some spyware or virus infections. If you aren't running anti-virus & anti-spyware software - you should invest in that first.....it's an absolute necessity. There are some decent, safe, free anti-viral software, like: http://free.grisoft.com/ If you want to buy software for this, look for Kapersky, Norton or McAfee.

Try defragmenting, removing caches, spyware, etc., adding real-time security, removing unnecessary effects, removing startup items, and cleaning the registry.

No. The speed of the computer itself has very little to do with the hard drive in most cases. Defragmenting the drive is something you want to do on a regular basis if you aren't already, and WILL help to speed up your performance. How much RAM is installed? That'd be the first thing you want to look into. How fast is the CPU? Are your virus definitions up-to-date? Do you have an anti-spyware/adware program? Is THAT up-to-date? Are you running a lot of unnecessary programs in the background? Are you using some software that's resource-intensive (press ctrl+alt+delete and check out the running process list, specifically the column for memory usage) on a system that doesn't have enough RAM?
