Does nuclear power go against the theory "energy cannot be created or destroyed?" or is the atom just another store of energy?

Einsteins famous equation, E=MC2 is the reason why we can get nuclear power. Energy = Mass times the square of the speed of light. Energy and Mass are one in the same thing, just diffrent forms of it. When Uranium deteriorates into 2 smaller atoms the diffrence in mass is the energy released. It is a very basic physical relationship but is only really taught at higher levels of education.
