You should use a biological filter (bio-filter) system. The type of system really depends on your pond.

Hello; An established tank of any kind with or without filtration should not contain ammonia. The only way that much ammonia can be produced is that waste is breaking down --- clean the bottom frequently and keep the waste out of the filter. Please quit using the Ammo-Lock. This only binds up the ammonia and the bacteria responsible for converting ammonia will not fully develop. If their is good circulation and good areas ( substrate, rocks, and porous material the bacteria will grow. Change some water when the ammonia gets above .5 and feed them less for the time being. Also, KOI need 5-gallons of water per fish like goldfish! They eat a lot, grow fast, and produce a lot of waste. Enjoy! OFM

According to Petco, Ammo-Lock is used when ammonia level is at the desired level to lock it. There sell ammonia liquid and tablet to lower ammonia. Supposedly liquid is better then tablet. I believe it may be true cause I used the tablets for ph and ammonia and they did not work. Keep in mind that Walmart sells a lot of these chemical test kits at a lower rate than Petco. I am not associated with Walmart. Just a person who likes fish but it can be expensive to maintain.
