  • Mostly that dental insurance is, more or less, useless. If you were to put the $30/month or so that you'd be paying into insurance into a savings account you'd probably be better off, I'm always shocked at how small a percentage of procedures my insurance through my company actually covers. If you find a decently priced insurance that covers more I'm all ears.
  • I would compare what it will cost you out of pocket for each procedure, cost of the plan per month and the number of choices of providers. I have found that you cannot always depend on who they have listed as their preferred providers. When I was looking, I called to make sure they were still participating providers. Some were no longer participating althgouh they were listed.
  • Can you go to any dentist you like? What things are paid at 100%, 80% and 50%? Is there a deductible? Does it apply in all cases? How many prophies per yr are allowed?
  • Check to see that it covers routine surgery for tooth removal and root canals. Some plans consider surgery as an extra expense and wont cover it. Sadly a lot of plans will only cover BASIC removal, x rays and cleanings. Check to see what they categorize things as, and what they will cover full and partial for. Some plans also do not include dentures and bridges.
  • a lot of insurance companies wont cover crowns, and being a dental assistant i have seen ALOT of ppl needing crowns..so make sure the coverage u choose will cover major work like that. keep in mind that alot of companies have a long waiting period just for the major work itself.
