some people do eat before swimming and have no problems. when me and my friends used to go swimming we would eat before swimming an we never had any problems. a website i looked on though says Do not eat 2 hours before swimming to avoid stomach cramping or feeling tired in the water.

I don't swim besides it is too cold. half an hour. If you cramp up and drown consider waiting longer in your next life. Mr Bill

Straight away if you're not too full to move; it's a myth you have to wait in case of cramping.
-
It really depends on what you eat...a light snack...about one hour..a heavy meal several hours!!!

hasn't it traditionally been 30 minutes?

I can swim directly after eating, and I'm sure you can too. I don't know where "wait an hour after you eat" came from, because it's not true. I can't think of any reason why someone would make that up, either.

2 Hrs

As some of the others said, there is no rule that you have to wait after eating to swim. It's a myth. Go swimming while eating if you want to, but that may make for a soggy sandwich.
