YES! Outdoors you can run up hills, run in the sand, run in the fresh air, run much faster and harder. Thats why all the world class runners run outside whenever they can.
-
In addition to everything that Henry mentions, it also works your muscles (particularly gluts) in a different way. Those who train on treadmills then race outside tend to underperform because of this.
-
Treadmill, I don't like all the cars driving past having a nosy at my running
-
Treadmill, that is set up out side. best of both worlds No people watching you But you get fresh air
-
May be I am conservative. I like a good jog in the park. Treadmills only in inclement weather. For a real run I will need a proper track.
-
outdoors, ive never been on a treadmill.:)
-
Outdoors and straight into the woods and never come back.
-
Outdoors most definitely. The scenery changing is very nice, plus I don't have to store a treadmill.
-
Run outdoors! Personally I find treadmills boring. Running outside is so much fun!
-
I usually prefer the treadmill for privacy and just basic cardio, but it's definitely no substitute for an outdoor course when preparing for a competitive run.
-
I run outdoors... I find treadmills to be rather boring and running outdoors you get fresh air and you can socialize with other people. Plus I run Crosscountry so im use to running outdoors
-
neither...I don't like to run But if I had to choose I would definitely choose outdoors....I love to be outdoors.
-
Well, I can't actually "run" because of bad ankles. But I do love to walk, and I prefer to do so outside as long as the weather permits it. I walk every day at lunch. We do have a treadmill in the basement which I do use sometimes, but the scenery isn't as nice in the laundry room!
-
outdoors because I get too hot and bored inside on a treadmill
-
The treadmill. I like to keep track of my time/distance heart rate so that I know exactly how I am doing.
-
Outdoors is more fun, treadmills: seems like you can just run and run and just don't get anywhere.
-
Neither I'd rather sit in my garden and watch ye all run past : )
-
I prefer outdoors, but I'm not allowed to run. My doctor says walk, walk and only walk, and my treadmill isn't a running style. I go out whenever I can, but at least my treadmill is on an enclosed patio, and overlooking the pool, so it's fairly pleasant, plus I have a DVD/TV combo in front of it.

Treadmill running will only work the same group of muscles as you are literally only moving the same muscles, whereas outdoor running involves a greater range of movement and offers dirrerent angles and challenges to the muscels. On a mental level their is simply no comparison as treadmill running is monotone in nature and outdoor running opens the mind to all your surroundings
-
All the health benefits are lost once you are run over by car. Also, a treadmill is slighlyt less impacting than the ground. That said, it is easier to keep yourself motivated when running outdoors, and not just droning away on a treadmill. Assuming it's not the middle of summer, the breeze keeps you cooler as well.
