Lack of sunlight.. when rubber trees don't get enough light they go into a winter-dormant mode and lose their leaves, and the stalk enlarges. Give it -some- direct sunlight and it will come back, but watch out! I put a rubber tree in full all-day sunlight and it tripled in size (3' to 9') in 6-8 weeks.. they -love- sun. You can tell if they are getting too much sun when the leaves turn bright red.

As a certified arborist I can tell you that ficus elastica does not need that much sunlight and the leaves dropping is part of its characteristics. Make sure the soil has had time to dry out before next watering.
