$500 will be just fine. I would advice you to invest in country specific funds like China or India which have shown to give upto 100% returns p.a.

You can invest $200 or $500 in a mutual fund but most often these are high-expense funds called load funds. Be careful of getting into load funds as they can take up to 8% off your original investment. Some of the bigger fund companies will allow you to invest less than their regular minimum if you are investing in an IRA. Check with www.morningstar.com to check which funds are load funds and which are no-load funds. No-load funds are your best bet. Hate to disagree with the first poster but you are just starting out and you might want to be more conservative until you learn more. www.vanguard.com is a good place to research as is www.fidelity.com T.R.Price and others.
