It depends on the person. Usually heals completely in a couple of weeks.

It took about four days of posicles and smooties for the swelling to go down to where I could speak normally again. Then it takes another 3-5 weeks to 'heal.' The tounge regenerates so quickly that if the piercing is out for even a few days it will close no matter how long you've had it. This could be a matter of hours if you haven't had it very long.

for the swelling to go down takes about 3 days. mine just healed after about two months, which it probably would have taken less if i had known putting plastic in your piercing irritates it. so whatever you do use metal.
