Here are the steps to mummification: Source: http://www.edu.pe.ca/gulfshore/mystery/mummies/embalm.htm First: The body was washed and ritually purified. Second: The embalmers removed all inner organs,so bacteria doesn't decay tissues. Third: The embalmers kept four different organs. They were the intestines, stomach, lungs and liver. Fourth: Embalmers put these organs in canopic jars and are wrapped with linen strips. Fifth: The body is stuffed with natron and sometimes with sawdust. Sixth: The embalmers remove the brain. In that time brains weren't very important. after it's removal it was most likely thrown out. Seventh: Embalmers place the deceased body on a slanted table and is completely covered with natron, which allows fluids to drip out of the body. This process takes up to 40 days. Eighth: Embalmers put bandages all over the body. Ninth: Fingers and toes were individually wrapped with natron and a protective gold cap is put on. Tenth:Then the body is ready for the funeral. Some Pharoahs thought that if they had a very elaborate funeral the would have a better afterlife. It would take up to 70 days to do, and it is very expensive.

The crucial chemical for traditional Egyptian embalming is natron, a naturally occurring mixture of hydrated sodium carbonate . It is about 17% sodium bicarbonate, or baking soda, which explains its drying qualities. The exact methods of embalming traditionally varied over the centuries in Egypt, with some centuries removing all the internal organs, including the brain very accurately, and others no so accurately resulting in deterioration. Earlier mummies are much better embalmed than those of the Graeco-Roman period. there are a number of sites that detail the methods which have been reconstructed from Egyptian texts including: www.aldokkan.com/religion/mummy.htm www.cbc.ca/news/story/2003/10/22/mummies031022.html encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_1741500907/Mummy.html www.ancientegypt.co.uk/mummies/story/main.html but basically it involes drawing the bodily fluids out of the body using the natron. It was a chemical version of the natural process of sand embalming, which was the original and accidental method by which bodies were embalmed.
