If your car still has the original, non-electronic ignition, you might look to the points. If the spring which closes the points has weakened, then they may not be closing reliably at high speed (point float).

I looked at the points and they don't appear to be burnt and seem to be opening and closing as they should. i have since then checked the timing and it is slightly advanced; however, it runs good all of the except when it's running hard. any suggestions now?

If the misfire is related to engine load, I would look to the ignition system. Check the wires plugs, cap, rotor. If its related to engine speed still check the ignition, but also look for poss. internal engine problems, like weak valve springs. Then look to the carb.

I agree the ignition system is a likely culprit for sure but I'd like to add that the 283 I owned had a problem with the valves "floating" at high ends. Most of the small block chevy's have had the same problem lotsa lower end revs but the upper can't handle them. Either way please have a pro that can respect it, look at it, she's a beaut.
