What needs to happen is the hair needs to be stripped of the colour (black) using peroxide bleach and then re-coloured to brown. Go to a hairdresser and have them do it for you. If you do it yourself you could end up with damaged hair that will look crappy. If you damage it too much, it will break and fall out or if it is long, then you may end up having to have it cut off.

I've had my hair dyed black a few times. There is nothing, NO color that will cover it or make it lighter on it's own. You have to get a "lifting kit" to lift the black out, THEN put a color in. This is a pure bleaching kit, so read ALL directions very carefully... or go to a professional.

Do not have your hair stripped, bleached or dyed. Wash it with dandruff shampoo and use clarifying conditioner. Lemon also helps (you can leave it in your hair overnight without damaging the hair). Do not use Color Fix or Loreal Color Zap, they will fry your hair and make you look like Ronald McDonald, and if you re-dye after using one of them your hair will just go back to black.

Depending on which type of colour you useed to dye your hair black it can have a metalic subtance in it renduring all other colours useless. You may have to have your hair stripped (which you should leave to the professionals unless you like the feeling of broom head) to get the colour out or wait a few months until the colour softens and try again.

I too always go red but tried black and it has taken from March when I did the colouring until now for my to get some red back into it without "stripping" the black out of my hair.

you should be able to get a colour remover, you use it like dye but it removes colour instead of changing it. it will take it back to your orginal hair colour

The only way you can remove black dye from your hair is either to grow it out, or have your hair professionally stripped and then coloured .

Stripping kits can be bought but they are and can be very hit and miss affairs. My advice is to go the professional route.

i used rusk hair colour remover from sallys it really did work not as much on the ends but what do u expect a miracle to happen ??! black is them most vivid hair colour and hardest to get out my advice is use a hair colour remover then a natural bleach then dye over it like red or something, thats what i did, IT DID NOT FRY MY HAIR, ONLY BLEACH DOES!!!!!!!!!! u will then learn never to die your hair black agen its awful plus everyones hair is black nowadays its boring!!!!!!!

obviously the best way is to grow it out. if u go to a proffesional they will suggest stripping it but it depends on the condition of your hair. ive also been told by a proffesional washing detergant is the best way, doing it a couple of times a day n then when your happy its faded enough, start gettin the moisture back in with a good treatment.

Ok, you want a cheap answer? A salon owner friend of mine suggested this when my mom's hair turned a light shade of green. (It was supposed to be blonde, but the hair color dye had blue tint that clung to her already bleached hair... so it turned green.)
Take some powder form of laundry detergent and mix it with water to make a paste. This acts as a stripping agent for the hair color. It really did work!

I am having this EXACT problem right now. I already went to a professional to have the colour stripped, but it didn't work. They told me to wait a month and come back. I actually just made an appointment at a different place literally 15 minutes ago. They guaranteed to get my hair brown. My appointment is tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it goes.

I have gone from black to platinum, but it really depends on the condition of your hair. There's a product called 7th Stage that you can get at Sally's...it is for "maximum decolorization." It works, but it is damaging, so you may want to take a couple of days where you don't need to leave the house...definitely do not double process on the same day. Mix it with 30 vol and about 3 activator packets, and follow the directions. I usually left it on about 25 minutes. It will lift a ton, but will probably be orange the first time around. Condition the hell out of it, wait a couple of days and check the condition of your hair, and then repeat the process. You can also use a purple shampoo to take out the brassy tones...but be very careful! If you feel that your hair is too damaged, wait longer to do the second round.

i had a cousin that had dye her hair black for years, and she wanted for me to dye her hair light golden brown. what i did was i took some loreal color remover, her hair was mid size so i bought 2 of them($9ea.) i got small string of hair and applied it to her hair then wrapped it with foil paper i did this to all her hair, i left it for 30 min making sure that i stated taking out the foil paper on the first ones that i applied the remover on. this gave her a light blonde, i told her not to wash her hair and to put some silk on it so that it would rehydrate, after 2 days i dyed her hair the color she wanted and everything came out good. the only recomandation i give hair is to put something on her hair that is gonna make it shine and not to straight her hair that much is better to blow dry!

you can use dandruff shampoo, or polytar shampoo. DO NOT USE COLOR TREAT SHAMPOO. it will hold in you your color longer. Wash over and over and over until you see you black hair dye come out in the shower. It will fade your color but not take it out all the way. you can also let your hair grow out but that might take a while. i wish you luck

do not strip your hair it will fry it so bad. i have naturally blonde hair and i had dyed it dark brown and was gnna get highlights. the highlights came out orange so i had it stripped and colored with the same dark brown. i was also growing it out at the time for my wedding. when i went to lighten i found that after being stripped it grabbed and will not go bac from the dark color. so i had to get it cut and start over. the vitamin c thing works and the dish soap works. jus make sure to condition it daily to put moisture bac in.

I naturally have brown hair. I got bored and dyed my hair half black half red. It was pretty cool but I got bored of it too. I had no ideal how to get it out either so here is what I did.

I went to sallys and got my some bleach (in a package) and a 30vol developer
I applied it like normal. I left it on for 45min then rinsed. I did not shampoo or condition my hair after. Then I blow dried my hair so more of the color would soak in. I then applied my hair dye.

After I washed the hair dye out my hair was really dry so I did a couple deep conditions, then I went for a hair cut. Right now my hair is not really soft and shiny, but it's not brittle or falling out either.
Plus the black is out and it's a nice brown color again.

    Good Luck

I have had many of the same issues ive been dying my hair black off and on for the past 6 years at one point i said screw it and put powder bleach and 40 vol devolper and it took most of it out but my hair got really dry after i did it so whaat i did was after i washed it and conditioned it once i conditioned it again but i let the conditioner sit on my hair for about 25 minutes and it put the moisture back into it so it wasant as dry and hard to take care of i waited another 2 weeks and then bleached it again and it came out a nice golden blonde color,i just recntly dyed my hair back to black and i am working on dying it silver for a cosplay i am doing (Kadaj from FF AC) so i think i will try the same thing again but bleach it an extra time, and as for profssionals they can mess up your hair just as easy as you can,and ive never used a color lifter on my hair just straight bleach.make sure you condition it alot the week after bleaching it and if it doesnt help get a protiene filler before bleaching it a second time it will help from damaging your hair

I have the same problem i dyed my brown hair permenenet black and i love it but i feel like a change, if you want to avoid damaage then i suggest to just grow it out naturally using non perment hair dye letting your hair to grow through or if you dont want to wait then go to the hairdressers and get it stripped by using bleeach it will turn it a orangey colour but they will redye into your desired colour afterwards.

however this process is very damaging on the hair and can cost to £100-£150 depending on where you go and your hair, DO NOT! try bleaching your hair at home as your hair could fall out and go really wrong id'e advise to deffinitley get PROFESSIONAL treatment :) hope this helps.

i have the same exact problem. this week i tryed to dye it a dark brown from black but it didnt work at all. i keep trying but it wont work. and no way im going to strip it. it will totally ruin your hair. i dont know how to get rid of it. a girl i met at sally"s store said to wash it for about 2 weeks in dish soap because it has this chemial to take the color out. and then after the two weeks you should go and get a color close to the color in your hair and it should work. but i really want to dye it right now. ill just have to wait but i wish there was another way to get the color out. does anyone know a different way???

This thread is obviously a few years old, but I wanted to share what worked for me in case anyone researched the question looking for advice. When my hair came out this awful, shoe polish, scary shade of black, I found a thread here about using crushed vitamin C capsules mixed with baby shampoo to make a lightening paste. I was very skeptical, but so many people said it worked for them, I tried in desperation. I was very pleased with the outcome- it didnt completely remove the color (black is so hard to get out), but it did fade it down several shades into something that I felt I could leave the house with, and was a massive improvement. After a few days, I tried an over the counter product called Color Oops that removes any dye darker than your natural color, but turns any dyed pieces lighter than your color orange. I really didnt think it would work but again I felt desperate, and figured in the end I would have to strip my hair with bleach and start over anyway, so it was a last ditch effort. I was pretty amazed with the results. My hair did initially have an auburn/somewhat organgey tint immediately after being rinsed, but I read that they more you rinse and wash right after using, the darker it gets, so I shampooed a zillion times in the shower and deep conditioned and low and behold, in no time my natural color had completely returned. This product seems to really vary between person to person so it is risky, but for me it was a godsend and saved me from having to bleach my hair and probably have it all fall out due to the breakage and damage I was experiencing at the time.

i have dyed my hair dark brown/black for years and am now sick of it. i want to go a nice blonde or light brown how can i do this without bleach???
i have tried a hair dye remover and that only worked on my roots and i have also tried baby shampoo with vitamin c tablets crushed, head and shoulders, all this didn't work either…
please help.. for as i dont want to wreck my hair,
my hair is in great condition. i wash it every 2-4 days.
    i hardly straighten it.
i don't really want to go to the hair dressers to get it striped.
i am thinking of doing the soap powder with water.

the only way i would suggest is by growing it out. if you bleach it it can really ruin your hair, i know from experience. also its very dangerouse to blach as you can burn your scalp if its left on too long. if your going to bleach it get a professional to do it. wait about a week until you die it again though. and in that week do a deep condition every day..
    really hope this helps :)
to anyone who reads this... DONT DIE YOUR HAIR BLACK! YOU'LL SIMPLY REGRET IT IN THE END!

    that is all
