In planning a wedding, is it inappropriate to request that certain family members bring a food dish for the reception instead of a gift?

If that is what you want, then it is appropriate. Weddings are over the top in my opinion, and should be back to a community celebration, rather than a financial burden.

If your wedding is low-key, it's fine. Play up to them how your love their lasagna, or whatever, and how their food would really make your wedding day special. Make sure you tell them that you would accept it as their gift.

It's your wedding. You get to be the queen of every thing and every one for one whole day. It's about you. If that's what you want, then that's what people should do.
