That is what I always thought about suspension, that it is actually rewarding the student for the behavior they exhibited by letting them off school. I think a better solution is to have after-school assignments or EXTRA time at school in order to discourage the problematic behavior.

Sometimes the child is suspended to ensure the safety of the other children at the school, especially if the infraction invovled a weapon or threat to harm others. But I agree that in general, suspension is not an effective deterent.

i know, shhh. i want it to stay around, it isnt much of a punishment. something more effective is an in school suspension, in which you sit in a room all by yourself in complete silence for an entire school day. its so much lamer than i could explain

Hi, This is my first answer to AB...I have done alot of reading your answers though. It's actually the one that made me want to join. My son was suspended last year in December. He had a pencil sharpener in his pocket which broke. As we all know, they are required school supplies. He walked from 2nd hour to 3rd hour with it in his pocket. He pulled it out in 3rd hour to throw it in the Garbage. Another kid asked, "What are you going to do with that?" My son's teacher heard the other kid, saw my son with the broken sharpener (exposed razor) on the sharpener...and she called my son up, sent him to the office. My boy was suspended for 10 days for a Class B weapon. All for trying to throw a sharpener away. Ya'll.., get this..he is in the 8th grade and I MADE sure my son was in school everyday. My son did NOT miss one day for 8 years...How rare is that? He Did Not want to miss school. I'm sorry my 1st answer is so long....

ISS (in school suspension). Horrible experience for the kiddos. Small room, a lot more work assigned than the teacher normally assigns. Lunch in the same small room. No talking all day. Trash duty. Kids wear the orange vest and pick up trash all day instead of going to school. Gross!!! Both were implemented in a school that I taught at. There was not a typical suspension... that just got the kiddos into more trouble b/c the parents had to work.

It is not a "holiday", so to speak, in my kids school. For however many days you are suspended, you get a "zero grade" in every class, with no chance to make it up. If you are a good student, it can be a killer. But, we all know that most of the kids that usually get suspensions, are the kids that could care less about grades, therefore making it "party time". The majority of the students that went to school with my kids, who were suspended pretty often, were the same kids, year to year. They usually didn't care about their grades, and they wanted the suspensions. I would say that the "in-school suspensions" are the best alternative.

The school my kids went to had a "red room". Kids in there had no contact with friends, and had different recess and lunchtimes. They were set their work and had to do it in isolation. It was much more successful than suspension, which happened rarely.
