  • I agree. Because perfection and extreme positions are unreasonable and absurd. So how can anyone be certain about anything? The answer is simple. You can't be certain. Further: "The quest for certainty blocks the search for meaning. Uncertainty is the very condition to impel man to unfold his powers." – by Erich Fromm
  • Geez, where does "faith" fit in with THAT one?
  • Voltaire liked to sound wise, possibly to cover up his lack of confidence. I think this is one of those times he was just trying to coin an aphorism. I mean, just look at the phrasing: "certainty is absurd." Isn't that rather dogmatic? Rather definite? In other words, didn't he sound awfully certain? I can just hear Rousseau: "Voltaire, are you sure about that?" "Positive!"
  • I agree with both.Doubt is not pleasant and causes fear.Secondly it is absurd for the mind is powerful and good thoughts lead to good ends, positive thinking is everything.
