Help answer this question below.
A lot - making aluminium out of bauxite is extremely energy intensive, hence is usually done in places with local energy supplies such as private hydro-electric dams. Converting scrap aluminium back to raw aluminium ingots probably only takes 5-10% of the energy of smelting bauxite. The catch is that 5-10% of a large number is still a largish number. Recycling is good - not using it in the first place is better.
i had to write an 8 pade report on a topic of my choice, so i chose recycling. this is the part about cans:
60% of materials thrown away COULD be recycled, but are not. why is this? take aluminum cans for example. some people are lazy and think "oh its just one can i'm throwing away" but what they dont realize is that there are thousands of cans thrown away, and millions of gallons of water and gasoline used up to produce new aluminum when recycled aluminum could have been used. metals, especially aluminum, are easily recycled and be recycled over and over again. this pays off in great pollution and energy conservation. producing new aluminum from bauxite ore uses 20 times as much energy as it takes to recycle aluminum cans. recycling one can saves 6 ounces of gasoline. in 2007, americans recycled enough aluminum cans to save 15 million barrels of oil.
Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours, or half a gallon of gas. It takes 95% less energy to recycle it than it does to make from raw materials, and can run a computer for 5 hours and also a hoover for 6 hours!
You should not ever drink out of aluminum cans,it causes loss of memory.A Sergen of 30 years told me that. The substance goes to a part of the brain and is hard to get rid of.Once we can use clean fuel for cars and trucks,it will be more benificial to recycle,as transportation of the recyclicables makes polution now!
They are now building factories thet will burn garbage with out poluting to produce electricy for whole cities.
