Officially, the "PT" stands for "Personal Transportation," but the initials also designate the car's platform. The Neon was based on the Chrysler PL platform, or "Platform Low," while the Cruiser was based on the Chrysler PT platform, for "Platform Tall." "PT" was also the production code for the PT Cruiser.

When Chrysler came out with the PT Cruiser, it was marketed as a sporty family car. It target marketed those consumers who wanted something more sporty than the standard sedan or minivan.
PT is the abbreviation for Part Time, e.g. Part Time Cruiser. Thus even though it was a full time family car, it doubled as a PT sports car. At least this is what I learned during my tenure with a Dodge dealership.

It stands for "Personal Transportation" Cruiser. I own one, and the dealer was kind enough to explain when I bought it..it does not stand for "part time".

PT stands for "panel truck". The PT Cruiser looks almost identical to the panel trucks made up until about the early 70's, except about 1/3 to 1/2 the size. They were used primarily for construction and delivery purposes.
