  • 1) "The seven deadly sins, also known as the capital vices or cardinal sins, are a classification of vices that were originally used in early Christian teachings to educate and instruct followers concerning (immoral) fallen man's tendency to sin." "the seven deadly sins are as follows: - Luxuria (extravagance, later lust), - Gula (gluttony), - Avaritia (greed), - Acedia (sloth), - Ira (wrath), - Invidia (envy), and - Superbia (pride)." Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_deadly_sins 2) Other classifications have been proposed, for instance the list of eight dangerous thoughts by Evagrius: "- Gluttony... a desire without restraint. - Lust... a desire for something wrong. - Greed... a desire for something more. - Sadness... a desire for something else. - Anger... for something "right." - Acedia... a desire for something less. - Vainglory... a desire for superiority. - Pride... a desire for independence." In addition to the enemies of the soul called Envy, Wrath, Lust, Greed, Gluttony, Sloth, and Pride, an eighth was considered an equal danger: Despond. This sin was an outlook of gloom and despair, chronic hopelessness, a sense of "what difference does it make?"" • In spite of iwnit's answer that Despond is the Eigth Deadly Sin, I have a simular answer in the form of an essay I wrote for myself. Here it is: DEPRIVE Yes. Deprive. Deprivation. The sin of acting irrationally in response to suddenly becoming an unfortunate victum of some other sin...maybe even the same one. Why that sin was commited against you can be unknown, anoymous, or immaterial. If anything, it is usually from failing to accept defeat gracefully, losing something your life and relationships depended on, and now it's in the hands of another person or just gone where it can't be recovered. The immediate effects of Deprivation come in stages. It begins when all of your blessings, dreams, your pride and joy, and then your faith have disappeared unconditionally, taken away from you without reason or cause. Next comes waves of overwhelming sadness. Not only would you cry, but you're also disposing of your sense of humanity, your fidelity with the harmonic human race. Everything falls inward. You no longer feel pain, remorse, or pity. You no longer feel "human". Your body becomes a shell to your immortal, unclaimed soul, the source of a new, unbridled power. And such power comes with a demand and a decision. Now under Deprivation's spell, you go forth to enact the same crime that was done against you. You rob neighbors and complete strangers of the same things that were taken from you; usually with oppressive logic if possible, or by sudden obliviation if necessary. Either way, their souls will be yours to digest and fuel your existance whilst you continue to the next victum and the other. You continue on and on, and you find out you're not just consuming souls, but consuming matter and space and light. Because you know, once all of that's gone, you will rest in a realm where no light can burn you, where no animal can pester you, where no debtor can harass you, and no one can sin against you ever again. Before, you humbled yourself excessively with God's gifts of light and life. Now, you only require darkness... the absence of light and life. The Hell you forged for yourself is not a raging fire, as most religious conservatives want you to believe. Instead, just... darkness. Rest and solitude for the rejects of God, Heavon for the Damned, especially for the victums of Deprivation. * * * * * * * * * * * * * Depravation is the result of any of the original seven deadly sins commited upon anyone. But like other sins there is a virtue to complement, if not oppose this one. That virute may as well be called: AFFIRMATION Affirmation. Love. Delibrate and unconditional. The kind of Love given for the sake of saving Depravtion's captives. Those who bear the virtue of Love immediately and unconditionally give the victum just what he lost. Merit should not be applied, nor should selfishness be favored. Instead, think of your unconditional act of Love as a way to save yourself from being that victum's first target to take his implosive fury out on. You will have done him and yourself a tremendous favor, you will have perfromed the upmost divine sacrement in front of the eyes of God. So I say to you, go now, and gift the ungifted, love the rejected, and cherish the poor. They just might do the same for you in return. Hence, the Golden Rule. • My fists!
  • Me again. Getting back on topic with the sins here, I believe each sin can be color-coded with the colors of the rainbow. I don't mean to be childish or queer about this analogy, but here's what I think each color should represent: Red = Wrath It's the color as the face of an angry felon as well as the color of the blood that that felon's hands spill. Orange = Gluttony It's the color of what most foodstuffs look like as they are eaten and as they are deficated, yet the glutton desires eating it it more than breathing air. Yellow = Greed It's the color of pure gold, bright enough to tantilize any mortal soul. Green = Envy It's the color most people refer to as a common phrase for warning others of this sin, but objectively, it's the color of the land one's neighbor has that's greener than one's own. It may also be the color of one's surrondings, as he's been outcast into the green, green wild apart from the colorful civilization which he hold's in contempt. The Grinch is the prime example of this analogy. Blue = Lust While red or pink best represents loving devotion, blue best represents lust which is actually a primitive, obcessive desire with no regard for the other's wishes. This is the opposite of loving devotion. Light Blue = Sloth This color may be the color of the sky, but also the color of a dead corpse's arteries, because once sloth takes hold of you, you never awake to what's really good for you. Violet = Pride This color is unique amoung others for it's warm, dark saturation, just as well as those of abused royalty or poitical ranking regard themselves higher, yet apart from the world. And what color would best represent the eight deadly sin? Not white, not brown, not grey, but simply... Black. That's the color wihch most people argue that it's not. It can be easily believed that black is the absence of color, but it's also the absence of light... and the absence of faith in God and all that is sacred. I hope my illustration has enlightened the discussion...
