That all depends on what kind of wedding you're planning. A trip to the county courthouse, or a flight to Las Vegas can be planned in mere days. A lavish, extravagant wedding, at the location of your dreams may require a few years (if only to book a very popular wedding site - some are booked years in advance). The people I've known who have planned a wedding have had it take between 6 months and 1 year. I think my mom helped plan my sister's in about 4 months. It can take as long as you want it to - just keep in mind that if you need to book a specific location, an officiant, music, catering, etc... you need to find a date where everyone/everything you want will be available... that may end up being the determining factor. If you are more flexible about the details - you can pick the date and book everything around that.
