A needle inserted into the spine may damage elements of the nervous system. Inserting needles into a nerve will interfere with its activity and can cause permanent damage if done improperly. Since the spinal column contains and protects some of the most critical nerves in the human body, it is not a bright idea to tamper with it. The spine is not one of the traditional acupuncture points.

A properly trained Acupuncturist will not insert a needle into your spine. Be sure to check credentials- they should be licensed by the NCCAOM.

The use of acupuncture points along the spine is a safe practice when performed by a proper trained and licensed acupuncturist. The points along the spine are part of the Du (Governing) meridian and are useful for many disorders. The acupuncture points on the spine are needled between the spinous processes, which extend 1 - 2 inches beyond the location of the spinal cord. These points are never needled to a depth that reaches the spinal cord, and are therefore safe to use. Whenever you visit an acupuncturist, or any healthcare practitioner, it is always recommended to verify their license and training. Acupuncturists in the US undergo four years of graduate training to be eligible for NCCAOM certification. This certification allows the acupuncturist to apply for a license in their State.
