    In 1889, there were fewer then 1,000 left in North America. Prior to that there were 30 to 70 million. Since they were given “endangered species” status, private and public ranchers began to nurture the herds back. Today they are no longer on the endangered species list as they number over 350,000 and the population continues to increase through careful planning.

    Just a note...there are no buffalo in North America. Think "water buffalo" when you say "buffalo", and you'll get a better image of what you're talking about.

    What we do have in the USA are called bison--very different. And yes, their populations are on the rise. There's a bison farm right near where I live.
