Nope, the DS "only" plays Gameboy Advance games.

The DS plays DS games and GBA games, but not games from the prior systems. Also, the DS only plays GBA games in modes not requiring the link cable. Nintendo advertises this as "in single player mode", but if you have a game that is designed for players to pass around the same gameboy, those GBA games will function in multiplayer mode.

Yes you can still play your Gameboy Color games on the Nintendo DS. But you have to mod your game cartridge a little in order to clear the 2 notched area's in the DS cartridge slot. Please diregard. I have just found out that this does not work. (DS is still okay)
