  • There is nothing in the rulebook that says it is illegal, so it is perfectly all right. Just to add, you can overslide first as well without liability of being tagged out. As long and you return prompted to first without any indication of advancing to second.
  • no it is not illegal. The reason people slide is because its the quickest way to get to a base that you can remain on it standing up to second and third will get you there slower unless you run through it. another reason is because its a good way to avoid a tag. Because there is always a force at first and you can run through it there is no need to slide except for some rare occasions such as times where the ball is dribbling down the line and the fielder picks up the ball and tries to tag the runner, thats when a slide is required, but like i said sliding into first base is not illegal.
