  • Yes. It was thought that the most active keys would be placed where the strongest fingers would get to them faster...I think. Other keyboards have been developed, b.ut none have replaced god old qwerty
  • It all comes down to the origin of the typewriter. The distribution of the keys responded on how frequently the letters typed caused jamming in the bars of the prototype created by Christopher Sholes. Sholes decided to arrange the keys with the most common letters in "hard to reach spots" to avoid the problem. Much more here: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question458.htm
  • The QWERTY design was based to slow down typing due to typewriters getting jammed. The Dvorak design came about later when electric typewriters and computers started being available, but really didn't catch on.
  • They got most of them from the typewriter
  • The inventor, Qwerty Uiop, decided to make them that way, for reasons he never divulged.
  • Completely randomly, I'm pretty sure. It's certainly not the most efficient.
  • You know, I saw a show on this not long ago, yet I totally forget the reason why. But there was a logical reason, way back when it was invented. I think it had something to do with stuff being written in Latin or some other language, and it facilitated the writing.
  • who knows, and I really dont care i have it memorized so dont change it.
  • QWERTY http://inventors.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://home.earthlink.net/%7Edcrehr/whyqwert.html
  • The reason dates back to early typewriter designs The layout is intended to share the load between the hands (left gets a bit more of a workout) and (I understand) to slow typists down - mechanical typewriters simply can't throw up those type arms at 200 WPM With electric typewriters the speed limitation is removed, but the layout remains because thaty's what everyone is used to. The Dvorjak keyboard uses a new layout designed for ease of typing and it is faster for those used to it - but it has not really caught on
