I would assume immediately. Just like humans. I say this because if it is a wild cow, the calf must have milk quite soon or else it would die. It is again probably like a human how long they keep producing milk. Until the calf can eat 'normal' food, milk will probably still be given. Nature has a way of keeping those cows alive!!

If they're anything like humans, they stop when the demand goes away (when the calf starts eating on their own).

About a year, though it will vary between breeds and between individual animals.

They can give milk for a very long time. If you don't breed her back for the next year she can lactate over 18 months or more though the quantity will go down severely. But smaller quantity in a cow is still a bit of milk for one family, for instance, because at her peak she can give gallons! Most families can't drink or use that much. We had milk goats and had a hard time using their 1/2 to one gallon per goat amounts.

So, after giving birth, a cow will lactate forever as long as she is being milked, either by suckling a calf or being milked by the farmer? Or does it become necessary at some point for her to give birth again? At what point? One year? two?
