Yes, the primary school I worked at didn't use calculators at all. They learnt their times tables just the same way as I did.
-
Yes, my son is in second grade and they have been learing multiplication and division without calculators.
-
yes they do because we have to learn how to multiply/divide on our own so we dont use them until we get into jr. high basically so ya.
-
The ones I know about do. I have many relaives in Education either as teachers or students and calculators or computers aren't used util trig or other advanced maths. I've been to generous to you. lol You'll have to settle for my admiration and this. It a radar detector lol.
-
Yes they still do, atleast in my region. Elementary schools try to first train students without using them but if the student doesn't understand a concept, then the teacher will allow using a calculator. In middle school, students know how to do it by themselves already, but it's not prohibited to use a calculator if needed.
-
Yes the good ones do anyways. I did most of simple math like multiplication and division in my head and learned many mental math techniques in 8th grade. This was vital for Mathcounts competitions where you are faced 1 on 1 versus other kids trying to answer math problems the fastest with out aid of any kind. Kinda like Jepordy for math. Also it is fun to know how to do complex mental math quickly in colelge because you can tell professors the answer before they can put it into their calculator and everyone in the room thinks you are some kind of prodigy or something. Being an engineering major we constantly have small math problems to solve on the way to our answers. This is a good way to make women believe you are really smart and you can help them study. Even in college for Calc 1 and 2 we had gateway exams that were short tests on the most basic concepts of Calc 1 and 2 and we couldn't use calculators. The concepts were just derivities and integrals we needed to solve.

I think you have to find teachers that can teach it without calculators first. I have discovered that math is a lot different now than when I was in school.
-
Off course they still do, kids should know what to do if there's no calculator around.
-
In England, yes. I didn't actually start using calculators at all until I started senior school, and I could multiply and divide by the age of about 6. When we do our Maths GCSE, we do two papers; ''Calculator'' and ''Non Calculator'', and multiplication and division usually form the basis of what you need to know on the Non Calculator paper.
-
No..not in Australia..not the ones I know.
-
in michigan we are taught how to do it, then we are able to use calculators whenever we want to
-
Yes..they make the students memorize the multiplication table. Ü
-
Yes! I am going to a community college and I am getting my grade.12 and we had to do basic multiplying and dividing without using a calculator.
