Strictly speaking, "Pole Position" (or "Pole" for short) is the most favorable starting point in a race. In NASCAR, that means starting at the front row, left side. That is because all turns are left turns, and thus the left side starting position would be the fastest.

The term is derived from horse racing which orginally used the term to denote the inside starting position. The starting gate was lined at a large pole, so the starting gate along the rail was named the "pole" position.

You start out first in the field to begin the race. Giving you the best opportunity to stay clean of any trouble or wrecks that could occur. If your out in front if it, it won't collect you.
