  • Usually the biggest thing is hair. Men just grow hair around the face different than women do (lashes, brows, sideburns, etc.), and in many cultures they wear it different too. Another indicator is behavioral. Women tend to express themselves with different facial expressions than men. Beyond that it gets pretty subtle. Of course many men do look somewhat effeminate and many women have masculine features, but this may be primarily because of hair and expression. My observations suggest that if you remove all evidence of facial hair and have the person take neutral facial expression it is very difficult if not impossible to distinguish. It would not surprise me if there are people much better at it than I am. It is not hard to use a little make-up and hair to make a most faces look either like a man or a woman.
  • Another clue, although not exactly on the face, is the adam's apple. No female will have one, and no male will not have an adam's apple. The degree of pronouncement may vary, but there will almost always be at least a slight lump below a male's chin. === Please note: this is only meant to be a clue, not a fool-proof method. ===
  • Also look at the brow ridges and cheekbones. Because men evolved as the more aggressive sex (the hunters and fighters), we usually have more prominent brow ridges and cheekbones than women do. These serve to better protect our eyes during life or death struggles.
