What type of cake is best for a birthday cake for a kid's party?

I went to a kids party yesterday, and there was chocolate cake, although I am not sure if everyone ate too much or if the cake was too rich, but the kids did not eat a lot of it, the adults seemed to like it better. I liked decorated cakes when I was a kid, what was inside did not seem to matter too much.

well,when I was a kid,I never really liked cake(I still dont),exept fruit cakes,which I loved!,so whenever I had a birthday,I'd ask for an ice cream cake,everybody likes ice cream!.But it really depends on the child.

I liked birthday cake with jam and cream in the middle, and really thick icing (frosting?) on top. That was the best, for me! :-)

I think that there are a lot of children that don't care for regular layer or devil's food cake unless the frosting holds their interest. But an Ice Cream cake with many flavors is always a crowd pleaser and saves you from having to supply cake AND ice cream:-)
