  • Gizmo out of gremlins when they put water on the poor little blighter.
  • The "greater than the sum" phrase is an analogy similar to "cog in the wheel". It doesn't apply to everything. For example, I built some computers today that are fully redundant, so the number of parts involved are far greater than the whole purpose of the system. However, without the help of several people, I could not have done this, so the effort of the many the systems whould not have been done.
  • A human being. The parts are a few quarts of water, a handful of salt and a mixture of other elements like calcium, iron, etc however the sum of the parts is a functioning thinking being with thoughts , emotions and intelligence - far more than the parts listed above.
  • The current New York Yankee team. Not having a good year as a team, but some of the best players in baseball.
  • Most new automobiles would fit into the category of the parts being worth more than the whole. If you could find a market for all of the individual pieces of a new automobile, they are worth (depending on the make and model) somewhere between 125% and 175% of the cost of the car new. I actually had an interesting experience with a lawn tractor I purchased seven or eight years ago. I brought it in for service at a local small engine repair place, and the tech asked me how much I paid for it. I told him that the lawn tractor was $1,399 at Home Depot. He started laughing, and told me he just ordered the exact engine that was in my tractor for another customer, and the cost without shipping was $1,400.
