  • If you have to give it gas to get it to start and it runs rough and stalls, you probably have a bad Throttle Position Sensor. You should be able to verify this by pulling the codes. Pick up a GM code key and a copy of the instructions for pulling codes from an auto parts store. (A few dollar investment.) You might also be able to have them pull the codes for you with a hand held computer, but I would advise against bothering with purchasing one of those yourself unless you plan on using it alot. The hard brake pedal is most likely a faulty power brake booster. Unless you suspect a faulty master cylinder, buy one with out it. In fact, if you suspect any other problems which might require opening the brake system (the booster does not) take it to a mechanic for repair. The brake booster will require removal of four bolts on the fire wall (from the inside of the truck) and the removal of the master cylinder (do not remove the brake lines, simply unbolt it from its mooring). You will also have to muck about with the connecter for the pedal rod. If you feel at all unsure about doing that job, have a mechanic do it.
  • You could also have a nasty vacuum leak which would cause it to stall and run weak. It would also affect your braking being how your brake booster relies on vacuum to operate. listen for a hissing sound in the engine compartment when it is running and look for loose or broken small hoses.
  • Another probable cause for poor braking perfomance is water and/or air in the brake lines. The smell could be an antifreeze leak and the running rough could be a number of things. Sounds to me to be a number of small problems adding up to one big one. The number one problem is the make. GREAT MESS of CRAP.
  • You need to go to a good mechanic for this one. Your power booster for your brakes has failed , it uses vacuum from the engine to work and now it has a leak . You can hear it if you put ear under the steering wheel . It sounds like hissing, or it just could be the hose that goes to it is bad . Either way it will make the engine run bad.I have done this job my self on my 1996 jimmy. You should do this ASAP before it makes the break mastercyclinder fail to as in my case . GOOD LUCK AND BECAREFUL
  • My 1994 Jimmy is doing the same thing. Today I had the fuel pump replaced as it went out Wednesday, not sure what they did, but now when you give it gas it just barely moves and feels as if the engine is not getting enough gas. I am going to change the fuel filter tomorrow, but it has had a constant miss in the engine and makes the converter smell really bad. Today when I picked it up the place closed before I could get back to it. If you barley press the gas pedal it is fine, but the more gas you try to give it the worse it runs now.
  • my jimmy was doing the same thing it was a bad egr valve
  • i have the same problem, if ever you figure it out i would like to know thanks :P
