Max Weber proposed three dimensions of social class. The three dimensions were originally class, status and property but were renamed by modern scientists to property, prestige and power. By class or property, Weber meant groups of people with similar “life chances” as determined by their economic position in society. Modern scientists have changed the name to property because the concept relates to material possessions and their opportunities for income. By status or prestige, Weber was referring to individuals who had little to no power in terms of property, material possessions etc. These individuals would trade their status to gain economic advantages. Property or power as it has been renamed to, Weber defined as the ability to get one’s way despite the resistance of others. Weber thought people could be very powerful without acquiring much property. Individuals that are politicians or individuals in the FBI, CIA, CEO’s,CFO’s etc are in positions of power. In my personal opinion, I fully agree with Max Weber’s concepts. In the first concept, individuals are sometimes born into fortune and therefore have more opportunities to do things individuals born into other classes do not. This is a proven fact. I absolutely agree with the second concept as well. For example, Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees. How successful do you think he would have or could have been had he not been a professional baseball player? Despite his minority, would he be a multi-millionaire and also idolized by millions of children and adults across the country? He traded his status to gain economic advantages. The third concept is quite obvious is today’s society. Politicians always act like the “high and mighty”. Their decisions are ultimate once they are voted in to office. The citizens have some say but their position does hold power just if someone was a manager of a company or a director of a foundation etc.
