  • The format of files is usually identified from the letters after the dot in the dot in the file name. If the file you have has no dot extension to its filename you will need a piece of software which is capable of checking the file. One example is File Alyzer which is downloadable free from... http://www.freewareplanet.net/filetool.php
  • In My Computer or Windows Explorer look at the file name. If you can't see a filename extension (a dot followed by 3 or 4 letters) go to the Tools... Folder Options menu item and then click on the View tab in the dialog box that appears and make sure that Hide extensions for known file types does NOT have a check next to it. Once you know the extension go to one of the many internet sites that list them, for example http://filext.com/
  • I'm assuming the member asking the question is referring to video that is playing / streaming in a browser window. In this case, you cannot actually tell the format unless it is proprietary to the browser plug-in being used. For example, if it's playing in a Quicktime window, it is likely to be (but not guaranteed to be) a .mov file. There are ways to 'capture' a video stream embedded in a web site. This would allow you to download it, at which point you could then tell what format it is based on its file extension.
