  • Not when it was done without the express permission of the property owner...and not when it includes pictures and language that make it unfit for children to walk by.
  • Graffiti is an art form... The legality and destructive nature of it is what is questionable.
  • g'day Glamorgirli, Thank you for your question. It can be but most of it isn't. When it is done without permission of the owner or in a public place, it is vandalism not art. It is often put in places where it isn't appropriate and costs taxpayers millions to clean up. Regards
  • I've seen graffiti that is definitely art. Only the choice of canvas is lacking.
  • there are actually places for graffiti artists to expose their work publicly and legally....;)
  • Of course, art is about expression.
  • Yes - especially tatoo graffiti. Sneak up on them unawares and they'll be marked for the rest of their life!
  • graffiti is art.. i love how they take public spaces and make them beautiful. obviously there are some who write their names or gang signs that i don't like so much.. i do though like graffiti in general, i like walking around an urban city and seeing what subculture has to offer. sometimes some really amazing collages.. and the murals...wow.
  • Graffiti is vandalism. Art is on a surface that you have permission to work on. Breaking the law and ruining other people's property is never art.
  • http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/848104 someone asked a similar question and im still a bit raw from the trolling 'sniff'. So my answers still the same.
  • yes, tagging isnt. but full on art pieces can be beautiful http://images.google.com/images?um=1&tab=wi&client=firefox-a&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&q=graffiti
  • I'd say that a lot of graffiti can be considered art, it's a person expressing themselves in a creative manner, their choice of medium isn't exactly relevant to the definition. Of course, most graffiti could also be considered vandalism, but the fact that it's illegal doesn't disqualify it from being art, just as it being art does not make it acceptable to vandalise other people's property.
  • Supposed to be comment doh now i cant get rid of it. Oh yeah it is i didnt mean for it to come out like that. Its not a duplicate question. My answer however would be the same, and so i thought id post my answer with the link. Thanks.
  • Art is in the eye of the beholder. The issue with graffiti is that its often criminal damage.
  • graffiti is art. art doesn't require that something be legal or accepted. the intention of the artist is what makes it art.
  • It is always art, just not the kind you are used two, art is just a way to visually portray an idea and graffiti does that in an innovative and talent driven way.
  • My word. The proper word, though, is mural. Graffiti comes from the word "to scratch", so, by definition, does not mean anything worthwhile, but wall art can be wonderful. I have seen some amazing things done on the outside walls of buildings. I wish I could remember what city it was. Maybe Stockholm. I'll look around. PS I was right. In Stockholm they have done some lovely ones. I include one at the Markets.
  • According to my college art professor... YES!! Along with toliet displays and crap cans from artist!
  • graffiti is art, PERIOD. whether is illegal or not. yeah some people might get mad because there property was bombed on, but if its something good and actually viewable, then yeah, graff is art. hittin up and just writing random dumb stuff, isn't. like small dumb ass tags aren't graff, nor is it art. but when you see those mural looking pieces, that's art. why? because, it expresses someone's imagination/skill/technique.
  • it is definately art. its just that it needs to be on a piece of canvas, clothing or somewhere eles other than places that get you in trouble. anything can be considered art really. i really do like graffiti & plan to include it in my clothing line.
  • 1) "Jean-Michel Basquiat (December 22, 1960 - August 12, 1988) was an American artist born in Brooklyn, New York City. He gained fame, first as a graffiti artist in New York City, and then as a highly successful Neo-expressionist artist in the international art scene of the 1980s. Many recognize Basquiat as a leading figure in contemporary art, and his paintings continue to command high prices in the art market." Graffiti can be used to communicate social and political messages, and as a form of advertising. It is also considered a modern art form, and can be seen in galleries around the world." • It can be considered art, but isn't always. For example - Tagging is crap, worthless eyesore. However, graffiti art - its always interesting, and often very beautiful. Even if its just a Poem written in permanent marker on the bathroom wall.
  • you bet just look up Banksy his stuff goes for tens of thousands of pounds!
  • It's urban art but 95% of it is an eyesore. I've seen some funny graffiti on train cars as I see them pass which amused me so it is a form of art.
  • If it's artistically created it is.
  • Are we talking about murals? Absolutely. Names sloppily scrawled across walls? No.
  • Only if done with the permission of the property owner, otherwise it is vandalism. I generally compare graffiti to my dog pissing on everything we walk past. Take the same piece and put it on a canvas or poster or with permission on a wall, and it is often very attractive art.
  • Some of it
  • I think alot of those graffiti artists are extremely talented and could probably have a very rich and fulfilling life as an artist, if they would just LEGALLY present their work. But, when they put it on someone elses property, I think it's really sad, (that that talent goes to waste). A new law in my city, (from a couple years back), is, if graffiti is sprayed on your fence, building, garage, etc., you have a certain amount of time, (I think 30 days), to paint over it, or cover it, or you, the property owner, will be fined. That is an absolute travesty!
  • GRAFFITI IS ART THOSE SMALL TAGGS ARE ART TOO ITS AN ART FORM OF BOMBIN AND YOUR THROW UPS AND YES IT IS ART ITS AN ARTISTIC WAY OF DOIN UR NAME OR DOIN UR CHARACTERS .:213KINGZ:.
  • If it's modern graffiti which is an element of hip-hop and originated from NYC. Yes it is art. What you have on the wall is a piece of someone's identity. When you are doing a graffiti, it's like nailing yourself on the wall or train or whatever. A toy (novice writer) can be immediatly recognized, because a toy doesn't have enough skill, drive or knowledge, and it shows in their graffiti.
