  • Well, most musicians at one point need money and are broke, so they pawn off their very nice guitars along the way and just never bother to go back to get them. Pawn shops usually have great quality instruments, but they are really cheap. I got my acoustic with a cut out and pickups for $75 at a local pawn shop. Just look around and you may be surprised what you find.
  • Go out and play them in the music shops. You want one that feels right in your hands. Everybody's hands are different shapes. Some of us (like me) have fat fingers, others long and nimble. Play the guitar the way you're going to be playing it. If seated, sit. If you're going to be playing standing up, then bring or borrow a strap and play it standing up. Once you find one or two models you like, write down the model and specs (or get an offer sheet) from the music store. Then look online or call around to other shops to see if you can get the same model either cheaper or in a more appealing color/style.
