Most prescription drugs change after the prescription date. Some become less stable, some are weaker, some are stronger. The safe thing to do is to toss it and buy new cough syrup, or if necessary, ask the doctor for a new prescription.

This question mistakenly presumes that cough syrup is effective in the first place, which medical science disputes. See http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10777506/ or search for the studies on cough syrup effectiveness on the web.
