All medicine loses its effectiveness after awhile. That's why they HAVE expiration dates.

Most prescription drugs change after the prescription date. Some become less stable, some are weaker, some are stronger. The safe thing to do is to toss it and buy new cough syrup, or if necessary, ask the doctor for a new prescription.

Medicine does not "go bad." It may lose it's potency but only by a small degree. You're fine to take medicine that is 10 years older than the current date.
