On which island should a person stay when visiting Hawaii for the 1st time? Interests are sightseeing, few people, lots of water, no cities.

I find the best balance between natural beauty and some semblance of civilization is the island of Kauai. If you're looking to go really rural, consider the island of Molokai, the Hana side of Maui (really rainy though) or the Big Island. Here's one of my favorite pictures from Kauai . .
